2005

NOVEMBER 2005:
DOWNLOADS, NICK SOLO RELEASES, 15TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS...

Hello! Firstly some very exciting news. The Hall Brothers have been approached by new folk music download company 'Woven Wheat Whispers' with a view to making much of the Hall Brothers music available for paid download.
The deal is on the table at the moment and more details and links will follow. This is very exciting for those people who prefer to download their music. Our CDs will, of course, still be available through the excellent mail order service at
CONFIDENTIAL Records.
We especially hope to release such rarities as the Hall Brothers 'Official Live Bootleg' which only ever got a small CD release at gigs and the original Hall Brothers album, the acclaimed 'No Place On Earth', in download form.
This album was only ever released on cassette and has not been available for years.

Through the new site, Nick will also be releasing 'Hurts Like Hell' the sought after 5-track solo e.p. for the first time. This recording was recorded last year by Dave Reilly (ex-China Crisis) who produced the tracks and played fretless bass and drums on the recording.
The tracks also feature Nick's sometime partner in crime, Chris O'Neill on guitars and vocals. Nick has finally bowed to the demand for this record to come out and is looking forward to the download 'experiment' by releasing this purely as a download. Full details of release dates wil follow.
Nick has also written a new solo album, provisionally titled 'The Wood Beyond', and is going into the studio before Christmas to record this. The album will feature one or two traditional pieces and will be radical departure in tone, feel and sound from the last solo record.
Nick is also hoping to record the debut album of 'Nick Hall & Hannah Bunyan' over Christmas to release in time for next year's festivals.
Watch out for Nick's new solo site which should be up and running in time for Christmas, and keep checking the DATES page for London solo/band dates.

Which leads us on to next year's 15th Anniversary celebrations!
The Hall Brothers are 15 years old (as an act!!) next year, 2006. To celebrate we plan to re-release our debut album 'No Place On Earth' as a download through 'Woven Wheat Whispers', as well as providing other Hall Bros music for download.
We will also be playing a number of folk festivals - some of which are already confirmed on the DATES page - some of which we are still making deals with - details will follow.
To book the Hall Brothers in their 15th Anniversary Year please EMAILus.
We are keeping gigs to a premium in 2006 to keep some of our special plans extra special (more of which later!!) so we will accept gigs on a first-come-first-served basis and will need to have a cut-off point after which we will book no more! So get in quickly to book the Halls for your festival, club, venue or event!!
Nick will be busy all 2006 and 2007 with solo work and other duo work, so we need to make the anniversary year a very special one for the Hall Brothers.

OTLEY FOLK FESTIVAL LOOMS LARGE!!!

All at Hall Towers are very excited about this year's Otley Black Sheep Folk Festival. After an incredibly busy summer of gigs, festivals, clubs and trains (!!), both Dunc and Nick are raring to go!
We will keep you posted on where and when the lads (with John Carey) will be playing (as we know some of you like to tour round with them - great fun for them, believe us!). Confirmed so far is Thursday 15th September when the chaps will be headlining in the plush surrounds of the RED LION in Otley.

This will be a completely acoustic concert. If you arrive early at this gig you will also be treated to an opening set from Spiers and Boden. Not one to be missed so get there for 7.30pm.
Nick Hall will also be appearing with Hannah Bunyan from Entropy in the form of their exciting new duo over the festival.
For these and Entropy's appearances, please keep coming back here for updates.

Also worth mentioning is the usual Sunday Hangover cure which is the Hall Brothers + Friends ROCK set at the Whittakers on the Sunday afternoon. 12 noon! See you there!

All at Hall Towers wish to thank you all for your excellent support over what has been an incredible year so far.

Check out Otley Folk Festival for more details and ticket information.

HOLLAND WARM-UP/FOLK CLUB DATE GETTING CLOSER!/
REVIEW OF "SONGS FROM THE SHORE" ONLINE!!

Hello! To prepare for next week's trip to Holland, Nick will be performing a warm-up date with the new band line-up at the Red Lion in Otley this Saturday 14th May. See TOUR DATES page for details. This is the only Nick Hall + band gig booked so far this year so don't miss it!

The Hall Brothers at Otley Folk Club is getting ever closer. We want this to be a wonderful evening so it is important that, if you can attend no other Hall Bros gig this year, you try to make this one! The lads will be performing two long sets and officially launching 'Songs From The Shore'.
Tix and information about booking floorspots can be gained from otleyff@hotmail.com

We have just had a great review of Songs From The Shore! Read it online at NET RHYTHMS.

LONDON / FOLK CLUBS / FESTIVALS

After the great success of the Hall & O'Neill gig at the Red Lion in Otley, the venue have asked Nick to put on more concerts there on a regular basis.
The first two are now in place in the gig diary.
They promise to be exciting evenings with hopefully some interesting special guest artists.
Watch this space for further details!

Nick will be playing two consecutive nights in London in June.
The exact nature of his line-up for each show is unconfirmed at present although it is likely he will be playing with a different line-up each night.

We are very excited at Hall Towers about the festivals and folk club dates we are doing this Summer and Early Autumn.
Bradford Topic Folk Club has just been added to this list.
Nick and Duncan personally invited Hannah Bunyan & Clair Holt of Entropy (firm favourite for all of us) to do the show as a double-header with them.
Lots of fiddle fun in the offing!

MORE GIGS ANNOUNCED...

The Hall Brothers have been approached to play two more gigs on the Settle-Carlisle railway this Summer. The Hall Bros love playing these mad, lively gigs on trains with a real ale bar.
A great chance to see the band and enjoy the craic in very intimate surroundings.
The band have also just been booked to perform at the prestigious Warwick Folk Club. This will be a fairly informal night with two half-hour sets and plenty of room for floor-singers to perform.
Nick Hall & Hannah Bunyan may be performing at their second ever festival in June up in Scotland, near Edinburgh, after being spotted by the organisers during a great session at the Old Dungeon Ghyll in the Lakes recently. This date is unconfirmed as yet (although they will definitely be playing the festival in 2006) but keep going to the TOUR DATES page to check on this and the other gigs mentioned above.
The Hall Brothers are also pleased to announce that they will be setting another date at the Topic Folk Club in Bradford for early 2006.
Keep checking the gig-list as this date will be confirmed in the next two weeks. Gigs are rather like buses - not much for a while then loads come in at once!
The band are really looking forward to all these 'Songs From The Shore' dates and look forward to seeing you...

HALL & O'NEILL - THE RETURN!

Hall & O'Neill (the new band featuring Nick and actor/songwriter/geezer Chris O'Neill) are playing their third ever show at the end of March in Otley's newest venue; the beautifully modernised upstairs room at the Red Lion in Kirkgate. This show is limited capacity to 50 and tickets will cost £4-00. We recommend early booking of tickets which can be done in person at the pub or via the telephone direct to the pub itself - 01943 462226.
Doors will open 7-30pm. There will be no support act. Two long sets of great acoustic rock music guaranteed! Friday 25th March. Don't miss it!

HALLS AT OTLEY FEST!!

Dunc, Nick and John Carey have been booked for the prestigious Otley Folk Festival in September this year. The Hall's really do play their best at this friendly, well-run festival and this year's line-up is excellent. Do check it out and find how to book your advance tickets at Otley Folk Festival Website. The Otley festival is usually a great chance for Nick and Dunc to catch up with their friends and followers and have a busy but lovely time full of great gigs in gorgeous venues. There is already a rumour that the Hall Bros may appear on the same bill as their hero and true folk legend John Tams (Albion Band/Home Service/Daniel Hagman in 'Sharpe' etc!!). Fingers crossed!

STOP STOP PRESS!!

Nick has just been selected to provide support for none other than GLEN TILBROOK, the excellent singer-songwriter from Squeeze.
This is an exciting gig - the exact line-up is yet to be decided, but put this date in your diaries; Thursday 7th July 2005, Otley Courthouse Arts Centre (or Nick's second home as it is becoming known!)
The Hall Brothers have also just been approached by an agency interested in representing them. More details to follow.

STOP PRESS!! HOLLAND DATES AND NEW FOLK CLUB DATE!!

Nick Hall has just been booked for two concerts in the Dutch town of Lochem in May.
The full line-up of the band is to be confirmed (we are also not sure if this will be a Hall Brothers Band gig yet or not - keep coming back for updates).
The concerts continue the recent tradition of Nick and friends playing host to students from Staring College, Holland, when they visit England and in turn performing for the 'prom' at the college itself.
This will be Nick's third gig at the college.
See the TOUR DATES page for more details.

The Hall Brothers and John Carey have also just been booked to perform at Otley Folk Club (now housed at exciting new venue, Korks Piano Bar, Bondgate, OTLEY).
The gig is on Wednesday night, 1st June.
This will serve as a proper, dedicated launch for their latest, critically-acclaimed album "Songs From The Shore" and will be THE big northern summer date for The Hall Brothers, with the lads playing two long sets. Floorspots will be available.
Let's sell this gig out!
Tickets and enquiries from Otley Folk Festival on 01943 464858.

NEW YEAR, NEW GIGS...

2005 has already seen a flurry of activity from Nick with guerrilla gigs, his successful birthday concert and various special guest one-off appearances around Yorkshire.
January will end with Nick performing two gigs in Otley on the same night (Friday 28th).
First he will be the special guest of ex-Strangler Hugh Cornwell at the town's prestigious Courthouse Arts Centre (7-30pm, tix now only available on the door in small quantities) and then later at Korks Piano Bar as part of a bill including folk band Barrell O' Cats and Entropy.
On both gigs Nick will be partnered by Chris O'Neill (actor, songwriter, all-round top chap).
Early February sees an important gig at Leeds' New Roscoe on Monday 7th as Nick and his new musical partner Hannah Bunyan perform.
Tix and information from LIVE IN LEEDS.
The Hall brothers + John Carey will then return in triumphant style with a gig at the General Ludd Folk Club at the Wheel Inn, Golcar near Huddersfield. Floorspots will be available if you get there early...

FESTIVALS

The Hall Brothers have just signed up to two exciting new festivals in June and July.
See the TOUR DATES page for details.

LONDON

Nick will be continuing his solo campaign to take over the capital very shortly.

2004

FRANCE, OTLEY, FESTIVALS & LONDON

The Hall Brothers are geared up for a very busy second half of 2004 with a new album set to be recorded over the summer, a gig to open the Otley Courthouse Arts Centre and appearances at Otley Folk Festival and Ingleton Folk Weekend as well as various other great gigs - see the TOUR DATES page for details.

Nick Hall is constantly adding London dates to the gig-list and has been described down there in the big smoke as 'the powerhouse of the English acoustic scene' and 'an inspiration to us all; truly one of England's finest singer-songwriters'.
You too could have a little of that songwriting magic rub off on you at Nick's two songwriting courses in France in May and September - see www.artinthelimousin.com for more details.

These courses will take place in beautiful rural surroundings near Limoges in France on MAY 7th - 9th and SEPTEMBER 26th - OCTOBER 2nd.
NOT TO BE MISSED!

LONDON CALLING!

Nick and Duncan have had to move their Addingham Swan Festival performance to Sunday 24th August due to a last-minute call from the prestigious River Bar venue in London (just south of Tower Bridge) for Nick to perform a solo "Golden Time" gig on Friday, August 22nd.
Details are scant at the moment so check out the hallbrothersdiscussiongroup regularly for news of showtimes etc.

Don't forget to come along to the Roscoe in Leeds on the Saturday between these gigs at 8-00pm to see the fantastic six-piece "Nick Hall & The Occasional Orchestra" in action.

THE GOLDEN TIME - Nick Hall's new solo album.

Nick's long-awaited solo album has now been completed and mixed by producer Nev Barker at CADMAN LANE Studio (Snaith) and is out now on the Confidential label.

It's called "The Golden Time" and features such popular live songs as "Big-Hearted Northern Boy", "Patching Up My Soul", "Wandering Man" and even a new version of The Hall Brothers' standard "Dancing On My Own".

Nick is very proud of the record which mixes "real" rock instruments with violin, flute and even bang up-to-date sequencing and sampling technology.
For a full track listing, on-line purchasing and a look at the fantastic artwork, see the MERCHANDISE page.

The album's launch will be celebrated with a series of gigs around the country, starting with a very special concert in Nick's home town of Otley.
The concert takes place at Korks in Otley on Thursday June 5th at 7-30pm. The concert will be filmed and recorded live for a DVD and will feature Nick's solo band, a special appearance by Duncan Hall (to play some brand new Hall Brothers material) and a full, exciting support bill.
Tickets for this superb show are limited, so please secure yours by reserving them (two per applicant only) by emailing Hall Towers now!

The Hall Brothers have not been idle!

Many incredible new songs have been written for their next album including Duncan's amazing "A Sad Sailor's Life", live favourite "The Love Of A Good Woman" and the already legendary (in Otley and a small corner of Ireland!) "British Racing Green", along with many other songs which were demo'd during the duo's recent successful sojourn in Ireland.

Having been approached by an exciting "name" producer, The Hall Brothers will be recording their new album during this summer and are hoping for it's release as soon as humanly possible.

2002
THE NEXT TWO GIGS ARE...

NEW!! - BIG LEEDS DATE FOR THE HALL BROTHERS FOR AUGUST! The lads are playing The New Roscoe in Leeds on Wednesday the 8th of August as the middle act on a three band bill. We haven't done anything like this for a while since the university gig days - so we need a BIG audience just there to see us on the night. The gig costs a paltry £3 (not bad for us and two other bands!) and you buy your tickets on the door. However, to make sure the venue know which band has attracted all the good-looking, fresh-faced audience members we're going to operate a flyer system! This also helps us get paid the correct amount which keeps the show on the road.
Just send us an email if you can make this gig (including your postal address) and WE WILL SEND YOU A FLYER!!!! Simple, huh!?! Seriously we need a massive walk-up on the night and it'll be great to see you!
IF YOU CAN SEE US JUST ONCE THIS YEAR - MAKE IT THIS ONE!

NO TIME FOR FULL UPDATE HERE AS YET - CHECK OUT THE TOUR DATES PAGE FOR NEWS ABOUT THE BIG FESTIVAL HEADLINE THIS AUGUST!

THE HALL BROTHERS playing at ST PETER'S SPORTS CLUB in Netherseal near Ashby De La Zouche, with expanded line up and special guests, Smith And Hagger. Friday March 30th.

BIG BIG NEWS!!!!!

BACK TO YORK!
Fresh from the fleshpots of Holland, THE HALL BROTHERS will be appearing at their old stamping ground, THE BLACK SWAN in YORK. Many thanks to Dan Webster for organising this one. Dan will also be performing on the night. This is a new venture for Dan and the venue SO PLEASE GET OVER THERE! We're really looking forward to getting back to one of our favourite rooms.

WE'RE EXPANDING!

We've provisionally booked John Carey and Lee Abbott to play fiddle and fretless bass with us at ASHBY and OTLEY in March! Come and check us out!

BYE, BYE, SCRATCH BAND!

After nearly two years performing with his mates in Otley's folk rock band THE SCRATCH BAND, Nick called it a day after their blistering performance on Thursday 1st February. Nick wishes the band all the best with their new line-up, and would like to stress that it was musical differences, not personal issues that influenced his decision to leave.

We're pretty sure here at Hall Towers that Nick will perform with the band again as a guest at some point in the near future!

The Hall Brothers enjoyed some excellent gigs recently. The gig in York saw the brothers performing entirely acoustically for the first time in ages. They also enjoyed a jam with support act Nicki Ward (an excellent young folk fiddler) who joined them for a spirited, reggae inflected 'Matty'. The gig in Whitby Coliseum was a complete triumph with excellent turns and great organisation/sound etc. Many thanks Alex Kirby for all his hard work.
HOT NEWS! Duncan has passed his driving test (cue sighs of relief from a road-weary Nick) and last night saw the two united for a rare 'off-duty' performance at Otley Folk Club singers night. Joining the lads were their great pals Rick Weights and Keith Hagger (of Smith and Hagger fame). A great night was had by all!

The Hall Brothers had a great time playing with 'Slide' at the Roscoe recently. Many thanks to all the Slide lads, Rod Holt and John Keenan (and of course the 'old faithful') who helped to make it such a memorable night. Nick said it was the kind of night where the audience are so great that they effectively do all the work! Thanks again to the 'faithful few' for coming to so many of our gigs, it really gives us a boost to see familiar faces in the audience.
